Light Bar Law Change Causes Ire

Motorists are being urged to ensure LED light bars are fitted within requirements after changes to laws regarding installation of additional lights were introduced this month.

The Department of Transport introduced a three-year exemption to a law which previously meant LED light bars had to be fitted in pairs.

Karratha police Senior Sergeant Paul Arnold said although light bars were a good safety initiative for our roads, fitting them on top of roo bars and on the roof was a potential safety hazard.

“They are the same rules which apply to fishing rod holders and anything else which can create an edge to pedestrians, ” he said.

“Vehicles are designed in such a way that if a person is hit there are no jagged edges if they roll over the vehicle.

“On top of that when lights are roof-mounted the light can go inside the cabin which causes a distraction to the driver.”

Sen. Sgt Arnold said police would roll out more public awareness of where and how light bars could be mounted to encourage drivers to ensure their set-ups were compliant.

Under the exemption, up to four LED light bars can be installed horizontally so long as they are below the front edge of the bonnet and symmetrical about the vehicle.

They must also be forward facing and switch off automatically when high beams are turned off.

Anger has been directed at the fact lights could not legally be fitted on top of bull bars or on the roof.

A petition set up by Saul Yates is calling for a change of the law.

He claimed many LED light bars’ size and shape meant they could not fit on roo bars under the bonnet line.

A Department of Transport spokeswoman said lights mounted on the top of roo bars could make the roo bar non-complaint with Australian standards.
